Every kind of air conditioning system whether it be big or small, expensive, or cheap, new, or old, they’re all designed for the same thing – to cool down indoor spaces by replacing hot air with cold air.
Sounds simple right? Well, it is, and it isn’t.
Standard air conditioning units utilise a chemical called refrigerant, a gas that gets heated and pressurised, transformed into liquid and then back again. This is achieved when three main components work together – the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil. The compressor sits on the outside of the home, heats up and pressurises the gas, sending liquid through the condenser coil and into the evaporator coil.
Once the liquid is in the evaporator coil, it will cool the coil on the inside of the home. When the fan blows air across the coil, the air is cooled down and enters your home. The heat that is lost when the air is moving across the coil is sent outside through the evaporated gas. This process of transferring heat will continue until the room reaches its desired temperature.

Evaporator Coil
An evaporator coil is the mechanism that the liquid from the outside flows into and the heated gas flows out of. The cold liquid cools the coil which the air is pushed through, while passing the coil, the heat is absorbed back into the liquid, turning it into a gas and back into the compressor.
Compressor
The compressor is kind of like the heart of an air conditioning unit. It turns the gas into a liquid to transfer it into the evaporator coil while also receiving the recycled gas once it’s passed through the condenser. The compressor regulates the amount of gas and the overall temperature the unit will put out.
Condenser
The gas that’s come from the evaporator coil will pass into the condenser which releases the heat into the outside air usually via a fan. Once cooled again the liquid is moved back into the compressor and sent back into evaporator coil.
